Three races were held on the fourth day of the Laser Radial Youth European Championship in light Easterly winds off Balatonföldvár. 207 sailors between the age of 15–19 from 31 countries are racing at Lake Balaton.
The rankings are changing from day to day in this leveled, top quality fleet. Overall leader of the girls group is Annabelle Westerhof from the Netherlands, the second is Karmen Perkovic from Croatia and the third is Matilda Talluri from Italy.
The men’s group will divide to gold and silver fleet tomorrow. Currently Guido Gallinaro is leading, Andrea Crisi is second, both from Italy. The third is Kirill Tereshkin from Russia.
The best ranked Hungarian is Andris Bednar, sitting in 24th place after 5 races.
PRO Bence Fluck declared, that is was a good decision to move the start of the third race from 11 to 10 am. At 10 am the Eastern wind settled around 6–8 knots. All races started under black flag, the organisers managed to cunduct three fair races for all fleets to keep up with the schedule. At the end of the third race the wind started weakening, so the course had to be shortened.
Bence Fluck says that the sailors are really well-behaved, between 207 competitors only three protest files had to be executed by the jury today.
The qualifying races concluded today, tomorrow the men will race in gold and silver fleets, depending on their rank based on the first 5 races. Since 3 races are allowed one day, in the best case 11 races will be held in this competition: three on Friday and three on Saturday, too. However, after the minimum of 4 races the competition is already valid.
In the next two days the races will start at 10 am. According to the weather forecast tomorrow we are going to have Westerly winds 20–25 km/h strong.
A few weeks ago the lake was still covered with ice, but nowadays the air is warm, and the water is getting warmer as well. Normally spring weather brings strong winds to Hungary, but not this year.
