Matilda Talluri and Guido Gallinaro win European Championship

The Laser Radial Youth European Championship ended with a day without wind. In the six days of the competition sailors got to experience light and medium-strong conditions at the Lake Balaton. 207 sailors from 32 countries competed.

Mári Érdi, the most successful Hungarian female sailor opened the prizegiving ceremony with the message: by the Lake Balaton the weather and the wind can be tricky, but someone who can win here, can win anywhere.

53 sailors came from Italy, and now they are going home with a huge amount of trophies. Among the girls Matilda Talluri ended up first, and Federica Cattarozzi second. Valeriya Lomatchenko, from Russia got third. Dutch sailor Annabelle Westerhof was leading for the first few days, but thanks to a BFD and an unsuccessful protest she ended up fourth overall.

Among the boys Guido Gallinaro, also from Italy, won gold the medal after 8 really good races. He reflects on the competition modestly:

“I never underestimate the field, since in Laser it takes a lot of concentration to keep leading, a small mistake or a bad start can set you back. I knew I had to be careful, since the 60 boats would turn around a mark in just minutes. During the competition I had some good matches, but I made good friends as well. I love the Laser Radial Youth field, we had a great time and supported each other. Today we are going to celebrate the victory with my team together.”

Marcelo Cairo Assenza from Spain ended up second overall, and Campbell Patton from Bermuda won the bronze medal in the Trophy. In the European Championship Kirill Tereshkin from Russia got third.

European Champion in the girls’ Under 17 fleet is Polish Marcelina Korszon, followed by Shai Kakon from Israel and Elizaveta Borovkova from Russia.

In the boys’ U17 division Michal Krasodomski won gold, Thomas Westerhof from the Netherlands got second, and Russian Nikita Melnikov ended up in third place.
